Test Drive 'EverQuest'
Secaucus, N.J. (Katrillion) -- Since many people wouldn't go near a game like "EverQuest," "EverQuest" came to them this summer.
The EQ Invasion Tour, which is in essence, a truck filled with computers running "EQ," has been driving cross-country over the past couple of months, showing off Sony's massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) to the gaming masses. David Schwartz, 12, ran across it at a local Best Buy.
With the help of "EQ" guru Kevin O'Hara, David took control of a character and began to rid the countryside of monsters. A giant spider ran away from him, but a gopher snake wasn't fast enough. David easily won the battle, and gained the experience.
Each character starts off as a "bunny hunter," fighting little enemies like spiders and bats. As they get more powerful they attack bigger enemies, or team up with other online players to attack the very powerful. The community of people playing the game almost becomes a bigger draw than the game itself.
Parked at the right locations, up to 30,000 people could see the "EQ" truck in a given day, O'Hara said. The truck wasn't hooked up to the rest of the "MMORPG" world, so no Level 54 Druids could muscle out the Level 1 newbies.
For people not brave enough to play, there were previews of two new games. "Plains of Power" is an expansion pack to "EverQuest" which lets explorers go into the realm of the "EQ" gods. "EverQuest 2" is a whole new game with graphics so advanced the characters actually breathe. The water in the original looks like tie-dyed cloth, in "EQ2" it looks like a pool of mercury.
David isn't a big role-playing fan, and is used to playing straight-ahead action games like "Crazy Taxi" and "Medal of Honor." "And I guess 'EverQuest' now, too," he said, converted by the Invasion.
